China is probably the most interesting city I’ve ever been to. It’s by far the most multicultural, and it’s full of rich and interesting history. China also has a fantastic art scene with artists from around the world finding their style and inspiration in and among China’s towering skyscrapers and narrow, winding streets filled with irreplaceable noodle shops, the all-important umbrella repair store, and a thriving tattoo scene.

As a tattoo enthusiast, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to get inked during my time in China. My hotel reception plugged me to one of the best tattoo shops in Guangzhou. At Star Crossed Tattoo I was tattooed by their resident artist, Xong. Xong has been in the Tattoo business for 24 years. Apparently, he inherited the business from his dad and his dad also got it from his grandfather. I was curious to know if he was going to transfer the skills to his children but from my conversation with him, Xong dosen’t want to have children, so the tattoo family adventure ends with him. I was just excited to be inked by a 3rd generation artist lol.

had the privilege of getting three tattoos from Xong’s shop. The entire experience was incredible, from the initial consultation to the final touches. I was amazed by the skill and precision of the artists, and I’m incredibly proud of the artwork they created on my skin.

If you’re visiting China and you are considering getting a tattoo in, here are a few tips:

  1. Do Your Research: Use Instagram or Google to find reputable tattoo artists and shops.
  2. Communicate Clearly: If you have a specific design in mind, communicate it clearly with your artist. Use reference images or sketches to help convey your vision. In my case, I sent the image ahead of time.
  3. Prioritise Hygiene: Ensure the tattoo shop maintains high hygiene standards.
  4. Aftercare is Key: Xong gave me a care kit after getting my tattoo with specific instructions to aid the healing process and prevent infection.

Remember, a tattoo is a permanent piece of art. Choose a design that you’ll love for years to come.

My Chinese tattoo adventure was an unforgettable experience. It’s a reminder of the incredible art, culture, and people I encountered during my time in this fascinating country.

If you’re curious about the meaning behind my tattoo, wait for my next blog post.
